A New York lawyer in the mid-19th century decides to hire a new copyist. Responding to the lawyer's advertisement, a young man appears at his office door, whom he describes as a figure "palely neat, pitifully respectable, incurably desolate! It was Bartleby." At first, the new copyist did what was expected of him: made copies. But then, well, then, let's not spoil the story.
