The first major anthology of Brazilian slam poets.

The anthology "They want to silence us: Poems to be read aloud" brings together poems by 15 women slam poets from all regions of Brazil.

Poetry slams arrived in Brazil through Roberta Estrela D’Alva in 2008, and are spoken word poetry battles with free themes that highlight issues such as racism, sexism, and social inequality.

With a preface by Conceição Evaristo, the book also features illustrations by Lela Brandão and is organized by writer Mel Duarte, author of one of the most outstanding performances at Flip 2016 and a member of Slam das Minas - São Paulo.

“Our voices as women, and especially those of Black women, can be added as a refrain to the voices in this anthology. "They want to silence us: Poems to be read aloud" is writing in confrontation with the silencing they seek to impose upon us.”
